Watching a space shuttle launch has been on my life’s to-do list since I was a little girl. I watch them on television whenever possible, I read the NASA website and Twitter feeds regularly, and I even saw the rose-colored traces of Discovery’s sunset flight back in March. But I have never fully experienced the rumble of the earth and the majesty of actually seeing the shuttle leave its launch pad. This weekend I hope to cross this one off the list.

You, too, can view a shuttle launch! Cape Canaveral is just over a two-hour drive from Tampa. Plan accordingly, arrive early, and you could be there for the photo opportunity of a lifetime.

Kennedy Space Center sells tickets for launch viewing from both the Visitor Complex and the Astronaut Hall of Fame. Visitor Complex tickets for this weekend’s Endeavour launch are sold out, but hardy souls can arrive at the Hall of Fame beginning at 1 AM and purchase tickets in person. Tickets include on-site parking, admission to the Hall of Fame, and special countdown and launch activities. Prices are $17.00 for adults and $13.00 for children.

If those prices will prohibit you from seeing a shuttle take off, other options are available a bit farther from the launch pad. Space View Park was designed in large part to provide locals with a safe place to unite as a community during launches. The park is only two years old, and aside from the great view across the Indian River, viewers are also treated to live audio feed from the NASA control room. Admission is free; just take care to arrive early.

Sand Point Park is another fine facility run by the city of Titusville. Located right on the Indian River at the intersection of US 1 and the Max Brewer Causeway, this Little League complex offers another good vantage point. Most of the areas along the river are great spots for watching the shuttle. Parrish Park, Rotary Riverfront Park, and Kennedy Point Park are a few more options for those looking to save money.

Jetty Park might be your best bet if you’re searching for an overnight option. Campers can bring their tents or RVs and set up just a few yards away from the water. The 1200 foot fishing pier at Jetty does not have a direct view of the launch pads at Kennedy, however it should be terrific for those looking to see the shuttle make its ascent over the water. This weekend’s launch is scheduled for 7:17 AM. I’m looking forward to rolling out of my tent before daybreak and walking over to the pier for the spectacle of a lifetime.
