It has been nearly 40 years since Saturn V and Apollo 11 led Neil Armstrong to take “one giant leap for mankind,” and the Houston Space Center is set to celebrate its anniversary during the next month.

Beginning June 20, Space Center Houston, Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership and the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce will begin the monthlong celebration of Apollo 11’s launch, leading up to a “Splashdown Party” on July 24.

“We’re really wanting to make it a big community event,” said Braun, Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership aerospace marketing manager. “We’re partnering with the Space Center Houston, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and a number of local area space companies to put it on, so we encourage families to come out.”

Events include NASA night at the Houston Dynamo’s soccer game on June 20, the City of Houston Freedom Over Texas Festival at Sam Houston Park on July 4, a stargazing party at University of Houston-Clear Lake on July 18 and the showing of the “Moon Machines” movies July 20-24.

The “Splashdown Party” takes place at Space Center Houston and is open to the public.

Tickets are $11 and go on sale Wednesday. They are good for food, entertainment and many Space Center Houston attractions. Ticket sales will be limited to the first 3,000.

“We tried to keep ticket prices as low as possible so that people can come out and bring their families,” Braun said.
