Robotics training and unloading cargo were the order of the day Tuesday for the Expedition 20 crew of the International Space Station.
Flight engineers Mike Barratt and Frank De Winne worked in the Kibo module with a training simulator to practice using the space station’s robotic arm. On Friday, the crew will use Canadarm2 to grapple and unberth Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 from the nadir port on Unity node and relocate it to the port common berthing mechanism. This move is a step in preparation for next year’s installation of the new Tranquility Node 3 and the Cupola to be delivered by the STS-130 space shuttle crew.
Meanwhile, Commander Gennady Padalka and Flight Engineer Roman Romanenko continued unloading and inventorying cargo from the ISS Progress 34 supply vehicle, which arrived at the station July 29. Next, Padalka and Romanenko began preparations for maintenance on the air conditioning in the Russian segment of the station to be conducted on Wednesday and Thursday.
The newest member of the Expedition 20 crew, Tim Kopra, focused on collecting samples from the potable water dispenser for analysis and swapping out hard drives on the station’s portable computer systems.
Barratt and fellow flight engineer Bob Thirsk took a break from ongoing work aboard the station to field questions from teachers attending the Canadian Space Agency’s annual Space Educators Conference in St. Hubert, Quebec. The astronauts answered questions about adapting to life in space, nutritional requirements and the importance of exercise during long-duration missions.
