The U.S. space agency says it plans to televise one of two spacewalks planned this month by astronauts aboard the International space station.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration said the spacewalks are planned to prepare the Russian segment of the station for future assembly work.
Expedition 20 Commander Gennady Padalka and astronaut Mike Barratt will don Russian spacesuits Friday for a spacewalk out of the Pirs docking compartment's airlock. NASA TV coverage of the event will begin at 12:15 a.m. EDT. Barratt and Padalka are expected to exit the airlock to begin their exterior work at 12:45 a.m.
NASA said the spacewalk will prepare Pirs for the arrival later this year of a Russian module called the Mini-Research Module 2, which will serve as an additional docking port for Russian spacecraft.
"On June 10, Padalka and Barratt will again don Russian suits and depressurize the transfer compartment between the Zvezda service module and the Zarya module," NASA said Monday. Television coverage of that spacewalk is not expected, but NASA TV said it will broadcast live commentary beginning about 12:15 a.m. EDT.
