ExplorationWorks, which is the museum of science and culture in Helena, has just received a nearly half-million dollar grant from NASA.
The 4-year, $499,000 grant will allow the museum to develop a series of high-tech displays that will become part of the museum’s permanent collection. In addition, the money will be used to allow the museum to expand its study of robotics, to bring astronauts in town to speak, and to develop a curriculum for schools across the state.
ExplorationWorks is one of only thirteen museums and planetariums across the country to get a piece of the funding.
Dr. Liz Gundersen, science educator at the museum and co-author of the grant, explains, “We’ve been waiting and waiting, and we knew it was big, so we got very good ratings, and we weren’t sure we’d get it. We finally found out on Friday, and we’re absolutely ecstatic. It’s a very big deal for us and for me personally, to have been able to be a part of this.”
The museum will begin to utilize the funds in the fall of 2009.
