Residents of the Los Angeles area could hear up to a dozen sonic booms this morning as some NASA F/A-18 aircraft fly at supersonic speeds around Edwards Air Force Base.
"Loudness of the booms will vary, and depend greatly on local atmospheric conditions at the time of the flights," NASA said in a statement.
"These flights are preliminary calibration flights for an upcoming NASA study scheduled for September that is part of a continuing NASA-led effort to reduce the intensity of sonic booms." The flights are being organized by the NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center.
